What is Twitter?

Twitter+ is a social networking and blogging Web site that invites users to answer the question "What are you doing?" by sending short, text-only messages (140 characters long, or about the same length as an SMS message) called "tweets" to friends, or "followers."

Most users enjoy instant gratification in their Twitter conversations, as the increasingly popular microblogging site is known for hosting high-quality, high-density content. In addition to being prolific in their tweets, the more avid Twitter users are in constant contact with their followers via the main Web site, mobile devices (iPhones, Blackberrys and the like) or a variety of other third-party connection platforms (like TweetDeck).

Why should you use Twitter?

Twitter+ is the ideal social media+ platform for people who always have something write. While YouTube is a great resource for audio-visual communication, Twitter is the ultimate tool for sharing concise, text-only messages. Twitter hosts millions of water cooler conversations simultaneously, all over the world. If what you bring is of real value, your messages will be "re-tweeted" (re-posted) by your followers. Some re-tweets proliferate rapidly, spreading through the Twitter community like wildfire.

Twitter is quickly replacing Google as the go-to place for up to the second information. Users post breaking news messages on location, as events happen, directly from their cell phones or mobile devices.

Who uses Twitter?

  • Professionals developing their sphere of influence
  • Companies seeking to build loyalty by giving direct access to the company
  • Celebrities (and Internet Celebrities) connecting with their fans
  • Communities of people engaging in current, topical, threaded conversations

The most successful Twitter+ users post ten or more relevant and valuable messages each day and regularly converse with those who have more followers.
